Actually Troy, backwards compatibility has been vastly improved over previous versions of Windows thanks to Microsoft taking a different take on it. Instead of relying on compatibility mode, which basically just flags your PC with a different version # to make the software think it's running an earlier version, Windows 7 now has a built in, fully licensed copy of Windows XP capable of running its own dedicated window.
What does this mean for you? Anything that would work in Windows XP will work in Windows 7, because you are in fact running XP based titles in their native environment.

Couldnt have said it better myself
That is one of the cool features about Windows 7. Im sure there is a name for it, but it is less backwards compatability and more virtual emulation. Xp gets emulated and your software runs on the emulation.
